Voting for the Leadership of Dance Queens

Voting for the Leadership of Dance Queens 130228

CANDIDATES

Two different groups of three people have submitted candidacy for the leadership of the DANCE QUEENS group.

Here are their bios and vision statements:

Bio
Didds, Zhaza, and Nai to run for prezidents. Didds and ZZ bring years of dance experience and knowledge, Nai brings Owls. We've been DQ'ers for 4+ years, have been in all festivals, most of you have seen us about.

Vision
Our vision for Dance Queens is (and always has been) too sustain a base for the dance community to work from, and to encourage, promote and support the wide variety of dance forms in SL as best we can.

Tiviyah Resident, Bonnie Revnik and Cloe Darkfold

Bio
Tivi is both well-experienced and well-accomplished in various forms of dance in Second Life, having embraced every dance opportunity that came her way.  She has experience in organizing events and large groups of people and has a passion for helping others do what they love the best they can.

Bonnie is 5 years in SL.  Came to where she is because she loves music, dance and creativity, beauty in the EYE of the creator, hard work, love of all that inspires, big heart.  To be successful you must try and give everything you have.  All things attainable.

Cloe is not a dancer, but that is why he's a valuable member to our team.  Able to bring technical knowledge that can only come from an experienced, RL professional programmer, as well as an outsider's perspective on dance matters, Zak will be the voice of reason and the audience.

Vision
Diversity in dance is important.  We've chosen a modern dancer, a Gorean dancer, and a non-dancer to make up this well-rounded team.  All decisions made by this team will come from DISCUSSION, first with members, then among ourselves, so that each side is represented as best we can.

Voting Process

You must be a member of DANCE QUEENS on 28 February at 12 noon. All DANCE QUEENS members (569 people) who can vote have both the Dance Queen and Dance King title options. You can verify your eligibility by looking at the Group information.

To vote, do the following:

1. Send Nottoo Wise a note card with the title containing an eight-digit number followed by your name, for example 135Hd58k Nottoo Wise. Do not put any comments in the note card

2. Use the form below to vote. You can only vote once.

I (Nottoo) will verify that only DANCE QUEENS members vote. If you do not send me your note card with your eight-digit number and name, your vote will be removed at the closing date for voting. You can see the results at any time by looking here. Voting ends at 12 noon on Friday, 8 March.

DANCE QUEENS Restructuring - Update 2

DANCE QUEENS Restructuring - Update 2 (130227)

This note is an update on the changes occurring on the DANCE QUEENS Group. Please see here for the initial note and update 1.

LEADERSHIP

Tiviyah Resident has decided to run for the leadership of DANCE QUEENS. She joins the DZN group (Diddy Hyun, Zhaza Zerbino and Naiki Muliaina) who decided to run previously.

If we do not get more people running, this sets up an unusual situation. I want to leave the leadership in the control of three people elected by DANCE QUEENS members. The DNZ group has said they will only serve as a group, so that means that they must win the election or they won't serve. With only one other person running, if Tiviyah wins, there will be only one leader. Since this does not meet the desire I have for three leaders, the result will be no leadership for DANCE QUEENS. Weird! So, if you are thinking of running, please let me know by 12 noon on February 28. Please send your name, a 50-word or less bio, and a 50-word or less vision to me.

All bios and vision statements will be published on February 28.

MANAGERS

So far, six people have volunteered to manage different aspects of DANCE QUEENS. Here is the list so far:

DANCE GROUPS - Keep up to date the list of SL Dance Groups on a once a month basis or when contacted. This takes about 30 minutes a month.
MarissaCloud
Babypea (PocketPusssy Bikergrrl)
Both volunteered and I will meet with them to see if they want to work as a team or only one should do it.

DANCE CALENDAR - So far we have not found a solution for this, but there are some ideas if anyone wants to give it a try.
Babypea (PocketPusssy Bikergrrl)

DANCE SEQUENCES - This is a teaching tool aimed at beginning dancers and can require two to three hours a week to develop sequences and create the note cards.
MarissaCloud

DANCE MAKERS AND DANCE EQUIPMENT MAKERS - Keep up-to-date the list of MOCAP Dance Makers, non-MOCAP Dance and Animation Makers, Dance Equipment Makers and the Illegal Dance List.
SexyS Quintessa

NEW DANCES AND DANCE EQUIPMENT - This requires someone who can join all the MOCAP Dance Maker Groups and report every time a new dance or new/revised dance equipment is released.

SexyS Quintessa

DANCE CLASSES

For the Barre HUD - MarissaCloud
For Choreography - Kat Feldragonne

DANCE CENTRAL - As of March 30 I will no longer host Dance Central on my island and will no longer provide space for dance groups to practice or put on shows. Dance Central needs some attention in terms of what is there but the idea is a good one for showing people equipment, freebies, theaters and many of the tangible things of our virtual dance world.
Lorraine Jupiter

DANCE DATABASE - There are over 10,000 dances and animations in the database now which is a Microsoft Access Database. Adding new dances and animations to the database and publishing the data regularly so members can use it...
SexyS Quintessa

THE WEBSITE AND DAILY NOTICE - This is the main means of communicating with the DANCE QUEENS Group. If there are volunteers to do the items listed above, the main role will be to keep the look of the website fresh and appealing and to organize the and send the Daily Notices. This should take about 30 minutes a day.
Kat Feldragonne
lilangels
Both volunteered and I will meet with them to see if they want to work as a team or only one should do it.

DANCE SHOW/GROUP PUBLICITY - This requires posting the announcements of any dance group's performance on the blog as well as keeping the list of dance websites updated and takes 0 to 30 minutes a day.
Kat Feldragonne

DANCE CURRICULUM - A nascent effort by Barbara Collazo has been made on creating a dance curriculum to have on-going classes.
Kat Feldragonne
I am talking with Barbara to find out if she wants to continue in the lead on this.

Many thanks to Marissa, Babypea, Lorraine, SexyS, Kat and LilAngels for taking on these responsibilities. I will meet with them in March to get them trained. They will join

DANCING VIDEOS AND PHOTOS - Skyspinner Soulstar

BLOG COLUMNISTS - Yummy, Diawa Bellic

There are still responsibilities to be managed and they are:
  • DANCE MISCELLANEOUS - This includes things like keeping updated information on dance costumes and props, managing the distribution of dance freebies, answering questions on the Dance Q&A, updating the Dance Terminology and keeping up-to-date the Who's Who in Dancing. This takes maybe an hour a week.
  • DANCE CLASSES - (NOTE: Marissa will do Barre HUD classes and Kat will do Choreography, but the rest described here is still not covered.) We have had classes on many of the types of equipment used, such as the DB System, the DanceMaster and the XPOSE. We have had classes on theatrical productions. The series that Rachael Young is doing now on scripting is another example. All of these classes are aimed at developing or enhancing the skills of dancers in SL. Organizing the classes, developing the content and teaching the classes needs to be managed. This can take several hours when it's done. Also, deciding what classes are needed is part of this role and requires paying attention to new technologies and providing information on them.
  • DANCE DEMONSTRATIONS -  We have had a lot of demonstrations to help dancers see how dancing is done. Examples include Choreography Show I and Choreography Show II in which the details behind the dances were explained by the performers. Also, the series of articles on How to Switch from the Huddles to the Barre HUD and How to Put on a Dance Show are examples. These are specific 'How to ...' examples.
  • THE "HOW TO ..." LIST - The "How To ..." section of the website is intended as a reference section to help get information about specific aspects of dancing. This section needs to be managed and updated.
  • MANAGING SPECIAL PROJECTS - !. The Dance Festival, 2. The Cuties, 3. Analysis of movement and positioning systems.

If you want to volunteer, please IM me.

I never had any problems before?

Dance in Second Life is no different from any other entity.
We humans are always trying to find ways to make things faster better and or unique. In doing so the demands get higher.
This applies to dance in sl.
The PC you bought 4 years ago might have been the top of the line at the time, but i can guaranty you its  at the bottom of the line now. https://secondlife.com/my/support/system-requirements/
Looking at the recommended requirements i am to think those are the minimum requirements for today's Second Life.

There are 4 main things  that directly effect the way your PC operates in Second Life, 3 of them are hardware components in the PC .Memory(RAM) Graphics Card (GPU) and Processor(CPU) , the 4th is your internet connection
Using WIFI .(wireless routers) i read are not good for SL,why? idk.. i dont use them.
Having a good isp(internet service provider) can make or break your SL experience.
The cheapest upgrades to your PC are (in order)
1:RAM (50$)
2:GPU (150$ and up)
3:CPU(100$ and up motherboards  the same 100$ and up)
CPU is as much or cheaper then GPUs but will most likely require a new motherboard.

Reducing Audience Scripts

Reducing Audience Scripts 130225

Guy Wardell IMd me today about problems that LPBA had with audience scripts last Saturday. Here is an edited version of our IM:

[07:51:50] Guy Wardell: good morning Nottoo
[07:53:05] Nottoo Wise: hi guy xxx
[07:53:20] Guy Wardell: is it convenient to have a brief word pls
[07:53:26] Nottoo Wise: sure
[07:53:36] Guy Wardell: thnks
[07:53:53] Guy Wardell: ok well you probably heard saturday was a disaster... we had to cancel
[07:54:04] Nottoo Wise: no
[07:54:06] Nottoo Wise: that's too bad
[07:54:09] Nottoo Wise: what happened?
[07:54:19] Guy Wardell: well SL was twitchy all day
[07:54:24] Nottoo Wise: yes i know
[07:54:51] Guy Wardell: but we have discovered LL changed our servers and now both sims are on the same server
[07:55:23] Nottoo Wise: wow
[07:55:33] Guy Wardell: yes
[07:55:37] Nottoo Wise: its a split sim? adjacent to each other?
[07:56:00] Guy Wardell: yes were are on 2 sims adjacent
[07:56:08] Guy Wardell: studio and stage 1 sim, theatre the other
[07:56:09] Nottoo Wise: wow that's not good
[07:56:41] Guy Wardell: we never had problems before but now we think that another sim on the same server can have a knock on effect
[07:57:02] Nottoo Wise: yes that seems like it would be a problem
[07:57:06] Nottoo Wise: how did u figure it out
[07:57:39] Guy Wardell: ok well if you TP and change server you get a message
[07:57:49] Guy Wardell: you will have seen that
[07:57:50] Nottoo Wise: yes i get it sometimes
[07:57:53] Guy Wardell: indeed
[07:58:01] Guy Wardell: we used to changing sims now we don't
[07:58:11] Nottoo Wise: but i thought it was a different server version
[07:58:17] Guy Wardell: so i was suspicious and tp right away to what i know is another server
[07:58:25] Nottoo Wise: like there are only a few versions
[07:58:36] Guy Wardell: well some servers are named or were anyway
[07:59:05] Guy Wardell: now when i tp from another server to either sim i get exactly the same server message
[07:59:19] Nottoo Wise: with the server name?
[07:59:23] Guy Wardell: which makes me think they are on the same server
[07:59:30] Guy Wardell: yes load of numbers lol
[07:59:35] Guy Wardell: sorry not that techy
[07:59:36] Nottoo Wise: ok
[07:59:50] Nottoo Wise: so what will you do
[08:00:29] Guy Wardell: anyway saturday sl was glitchy and we had couple real idiots in the audience wiht scripts load you would not believe and before we could eject them we poofed
[08:00:43] Nottoo Wise: awww
[08:01:21] Guy Wardell: so we have installed a new vestibule area and you can not get to the theater unless you are below a certain number of scripts and MB
[08:01:27] Guy Wardell: yesterday worked a treat
[08:01:32] Guy Wardell: 54 in the the theatre
[08:01:33] Nottoo Wise: good
[08:01:42] Nottoo Wise: a number of venues have started doing that
[08:01:46] Guy Wardell: if i may pass you a NC i am sending out to the students
[08:01:47] Nottoo Wise: great
[08:01:54] Nottoo Wise: yes plz
[08:01:57] Guy Wardell: just so you can see what we did

Here is the Notecard

Records Broken!

If there were any doubts that the LPBA could not put on a Great Show they were totally dispelled on Sunday.

We had the largest audience ever, 54 in the theatre, and the largest number of participating dancers- 27 on stage for act 4. We have raised over US$100 for the Good Cause.

We had total cooperation from a wonderful audience and the new arrivals vestibule that Lizzy made worked wonderfully.

Thank you is a little word but we all hope you know how much your tremendous dedication, loyalty and hard work is appreciated by us, your fellow students, the audience and the recipients of our Good Cause donations.

It would have been so easy to get downhearted after Saturday’s problems but we did the opposite and gave our best performance ever – a wonderful achievement.

Please take great pride in what you have all done and achieved.

With thanks and best wishes to you all,

Miss Lissa, Miss Soosy and Mr Guy

Guy

=====

So, I asked Guy for details of what he had done and he invited me to the vestibule and showed me the details.

Here Guy, Lizzy Saintlouis and I are at the vestibule.

The audience members land at the vestibule for the show. There are two signs, a script monitor and a curtain here.

The script monitor shows the number of scripts and the memory required. Guy said it is a 150L script monitor found on SL Marketplace. It's made by Karsten Runningbear. Some of you may have the one I have made by Ales Beaumont. Both do the same thing.

The curtain has text on it describing the limits for number of scripts and memory.

Guy has written a script ([PE) Script lag gate v1.02) that prevents passage through the curtain if an avatar's script count exceeds 100 or the memory exceeds 5 MB. He donated the script to us and the script and two sign textures are in the DANCE QUEENS Free Stuff box at Dance Central with the name Audience Script Control.

Once an audience member passes through the curtain, she/he can TP to the theater. In the theater is another sign and script monitor.

Guy then ejected anyone in the theater over the limits. Fortunately, no one was ejected. The avatar script monitor I have does the ejecting automatically.

So, many thanks to both Guy and Lizzy for the details on how they have helped solve this problem.

DANCE QUEENS Restructuring - Update 1

DANCE QUEENS Restructuring - Update 1 130222

This note is an update on the restructuring of DANCE QUEENS as announced here.

LEADERSHIP

Diddy Hyun, Naiki Muliaina and Zhaza Zerbino have decided to run for the leadership of DANCE QUEENS as a group. The condition they set was that they run not as individuals rather as a group. If they win the election, all three will serve. If they do not win and come in second or third, none will serve. The logic they gave me is that none of the three has the time to do it alone, but together they do, and they will definitely work as a team.

I had not anticipated a threesome running, but decided to accept this idea. So they are candidates who will serve only if they win the most votes.

If you want to run for the leadership of DANCE QUEENS, please send your name, a 50-word or less bio, and a 50-word or less vision to me by 12 noon on February 28. If I receive no more candidates, Diddy, Naiki and Zhaza will be the new leaders.

All bios and vision statements will be published on February 28.

DanceMaster Pro 3.0 Update

DanceMaster Pro 3.0 Update 130221

Fasten your seat belts and return your trays back to there upright position

I am not sure how many know about what parallels lay ahead in sl, but it was brought to my attention by MarissaCloud. This was copied from the FireStrorm Viewer website.

On Wednesday we had a lengthy Question and Answer meeting with as many people as could fit into a region. We explained that our current internal code is quite unstable after merging with LL’s latest release code and we expect things to get worse once we merge in Server Side Baking  (SSB) code. The main point is that we are faced with some big challenges and expect we will have to release SSB before our viewer code has reached our stability standards or passed our Quality Assurance testing. This is because we are on the clock with this one and once LL flips the switch for SSB you will all need a viewer that has SSB capability, else avatars everywhere may look like this.
A great deal more was also discussed; for a full summary of the Q&A, Inara Pey’s BLOG and Nalates Urriah’s BLOG  both have very well written summaries and I highly encourage you to have a read from them, as well please send your friends to read them too. The next few months are going to be rough and it’ll be good for everyone if folks understood why.
Pantera Polnocy was kind enough to record the meeting on video, you can watch that here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_B8iWQ46Wg (it starts around 16 minutes in).
TRANSCRIPT UPDATE: Inara Pey has written a very good and detailed transcript for those with hearing impairments. You can read the transcript on her blog here http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2013/02/19/firestorm-meeting-13th-february-2013-video-and-transcript/
Good things are coming and the destination looks very promising, but the journey may be a long and rough ride.

A New Structure for DANCE QUEENS

A New Structure for DANCE QUEENS 130220

I have taken several weeks off and thought a lot about DANCE QUEENS and where it should go. Let me share with you the direction for the Group as I see it.

First, let me say that this group was started by me and I have been the leader for almost all of its life, but I think many of you have a feeling that you also are a part owner of DANCE QUEENS since it serves the entire dance community and many of you have been involved in some way. I think almost all of us want to see DANCE QUEENS continue and grow in providing information and leadership in dancing.

I have decided to end my role as leader of DANCE QUEENS on March 30. The recent discussion of the Cutie Awards seemed to get stuck on what kind of structure is needed to make them work in 2013. So that structure won't be an issue for the broader DANCE QUEENS Group, I will try to set up a structure for continuing DANCE QUEENS as a resource for dancers in SL. Here is what I hope to accomplish before the end of March.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE

There is a need for four types of work in DANCE QUEENS. The first is for people to volunteer to manage the information resources that we have developed, for example the list of Dance Makers, the Dance Database, this Website and the Who's Who of Dancing. The second is to continue and extend the educational aspects of DANCE QUEENS. The third is for leadership on what I will call special projects done by DANCE QUEENS, for example, the annual Dance Festival and the Cuties. The fourth is for leadership to point direction and address issues involved with the Group and dancing.

I will describe each in detail, then ask for volunteers to take responsibilities.

MANAGING THE INFORMATION RESOURCES

For the first area, managing the information sources, we already have some volunteers who help:

  • DANCING VIDEOS AND PHOTOS - Skyspinner Soulstar
  • BLOG COLUMNISTS - Yummy, Diawa Bellic

Here are the additional areas where I am seeking volunteers to manage the information resource and my estimate of the work involved. These are generally non-controversial roles, but do require an ongoing time commitment and posting on the blog the changes.

  • DANCE GROUPS - Keep up to date the list of SL Dance Groups on a once a month basis or when contacted. This takes about 30 minutes a month.
  • DANCE MAKERS AND DANCE EQUIPMENT MAKERS - Keep up-to-date the list of MOCAP Dance Makers, non-MOCAP Dance and Animation Makers, Dance Equipment Makers and the Illegal Dance List. This requires about three hours a month to add new makers and check whether existing makers are still active. There is a bit of controversy concerning illegal dance makers since they sometimes may attack the person who reveals what they are doing.
  • NEW DANCES AND DANCE EQUIPMENT - This requires someone who can join all the MOCAP Dance Maker Groups and report every time a new dance or new/revised dance equipment is released. This takes about 30 minutes a day to post on the blog.
  • DANCE SHOW/GROUP PUBLICITY - This requires posting the announcements of any dance group's performance on the blog as well as keeping the list of dance website updated and takes 0 to 30 minutes a day.
  • DANCE CALENDAR - So far we have not found a solution for this, but there are some ideas if anyone wants to give it a try. It takes maybe 30 minutes a day.
  • DANCE DATABASE - There are over 10,000 dances and animations in the database now which is a Microsoft Access Database. Adding new dances and animations to the database and publishing the data regularly so members can use it can take several hours a week.
  • DANCE CENTRAL - As of March 30 I will no longer host Dance Central on my island and will no longer provide space for dance groups to practice or put on shows. Dance Central needs some attention in terms of what is there but the idea is a good one for showing people equipment, freebies, theaters and many of the tangible things of our virtual dance world.
  • THE WEBSITE AND DAILY NOTICE - This is the main means of communicating with the DANCE QUEENS Group. If there are volunteers to do the items listed above, the main role will be to keep the look of the website fresh and appealing and to organize the and send the Daily Notices. This should take about 30 minutes a day.

MANAGING DANCE EDUCATION

One of the things DANCE QUEENS has done is to provide educational help for beginning dancers as well as information on new dance techniques and methods for advanced dancers. Not all of the things listed below have to be done every week or even every month, but to continue this aspect of DANCE QUEENS someone(s) has to feel the responsibility to make something happen. Here is what has been done in the past:

  • DANCE SEQUENCES - This is a teaching tool aimed at beginning dancers and can require two to three hours a week to develop sequences and create the note cards.
  • DANCE CLASSES - We have classes about once a quarter on Freestyle and Sequenced Choreography. We have had classes on many of the types of equipment used, such as the DB System, the DanceMaster and the XPOSE.
  • DANCE CURRICULUM - A nascent effort by Barbara Collazo has been made on creating a dance curriculum to have on-going classes.
MANAGING SPECIAL PROJECTS

Right now there are two obvious special projects a year: the Dance Festival and the Cuties. Both require a tremendous amount of effort to make happen, a lot of organizational skill and some financial resources. If DANCE QUEENS wants one or both of these to continue (or any other special projects) leadership for the project needs to step forward. In late March I will contribute 30,000 Lindens to the DANCE QUEENS Group as a way to help pay for the effort for this year.

There are some less obvious Special Projects, for example, the Comparison of Dance HUDs and the Comparison of System-Wide Dance Systems. These types of projects require not only organizational skills but also technical skills. An example of a need that exists right now is a comparison of SL movement and positioning systems.

Again, leadership is needed to make any of these types of special projects work.

PROVIDING LEADERSHIP

Just about everything that I have described above involves completing a set of tasks that are defined already or can be redefined. These are all important, but not enough for DANCE QUEENS to survive. Leadership with a vision of where the organization is going is needed. Let me list some of the things that DANCE QUEENS has accomplished or had a role in making happen:
  • Dance times on almost all MOCAP dances
  • Collaboration of dance groups
  • MOCAP Dance Makers seeking input from DANCE QUEENS members
  • Raising the bar on performance by showing the work of different groups
These things are not my accomplishment alone. Many people have contributed to this. There is no inner circle or core group in DANCE QUEENS. These things have happened because of ideas that others have had that they shared with me or my own ideas. Ideas have come by IM, note card, through surveys and many more ways.

There has to be continued leadership not just to manage the information, education and special projects, but also to provide vision of where we should go to make dancing more fun in SL. To me this is the most challenging part of DANCE QUEENS, but also the most rewarding. This is where a difference can be made.

A STRUCTURE FOR DANCE QUEENS

The structure that we will have for DANCE QUEENS will be two parts. One is an elected leadership and the other is volunteer managers.

LEADERSHIP

There will be a three-person leadership group. The three leaders will be responsible for the vision and overall management of the DANCE QUEENS Group, i.e. the three Nottoos. These three people are the decision-makers. I think there is a way to turn over all the DANCE QUEENS controls to these three leaders. They will make decisions as a group and use voting if consensus cannot be reached.

Anyone who is a member of DANCE QUEENS can run for a leadership position. If you are interested in being one of the three Leaders, send your name, a 50 word or less bio, and a 50 word or less vision of what you want to accomplish to me by 12 noon February 28. If there are not at least three people interested in being a leader, we will continue DANCE QUEENS without vision or leadership. It will be clear to me that the interest in DANCE QUEENS is not sufficient to keep it alive. If there are more than three people interested in being a Leader, we will have an election where each DANCE QUEENS member gets one vote and the top three vote getters become the Leaders. Voting will be set up similarly to the Cutie Award voting using an eight digit number and I will ask Xandi Mars to help. If there are exactly three people wanting to be a Leader, they will be elected unanimously without a vote. Any election will be completed by March 9. Leaders are elected for one year terms.

VOLUNTEER MANAGERS

If you want to help but do not want to be a Leader, you can be a Volunteer Manager. Choose an area from the descriptions above on Managing the Information Resources, Managing Dance education and Managing Special projects and tell me what you want to do by March 9.

TRANSITION

Between March 9 and March 30 I will train all Volunteer Managers and have any discussions with the Leaders that they desire. On March 31 the Leaders are in charge and the Managers can make things happen in their area of responsibility. At this point I will become a silent member of DANCE QUEENS and will be available only to provide technical know-how if needed.

CHANGING THE STRUCTURE

I am not asking for input on the structure that I describe above. After March 31 the Leaders can make structural changes, but the only requirement is that any structural changes made in 2013 must be approved by a vote by the DANCE QUEENS members.

A FINAL WORD

I am stopping as the leader of DANCE QUEENS because it just is too much to do and no longer fun for me. Like you, I am here for fun and when the fun stops, it's time to do something else.

I have lots of friends in DANCE QUEENS and I really hope the Group continues. It's up to you.
